High Relief with the Madonna and Child
Roman or Neapolitan Sculptor
(Early 16th century)
- Marble
- H. 32,5 cm e largh. 23,5 cm
In the past, the sculpture was attributed to Zuan Zorzi Lascaris, called Pyrgoteles, as documented by a handwritten opinion by Sandro Orsi on the reverse of a photograph from the period.
This attribution can no longer be sustained. At the suggestion of Professor Luca Siracusano, to whom we are grateful, a central-southern Italian context, between Rome and Naples, now appears far more convincing, although a more precise attribution remains difficult to establish at present.
