Saint Mark
Laurent De La Hyre
(Paris 1606 - 1656)
- Black chalk and grey wash
- 111 x 190 mm
The sheet, hitherto unpublished, finds a precise match, in technique and subject, in four other drawings published in the catalogue of the exhibition dedicated to the artist in 1988 (1). Two of these belong to the Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Orléans (nos. 70 and 73), a third to the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin (no. 72), while the location of the fourth remains unknown (no. 71). This group of sheets is in all probability related to a unified decorative project, currently unidentified or lost, which displays the conceptual and stylistic coherence typical of La Hyre’s graphic production.
