Head of a Boy
Bolognese Artist
(Second half of the 17th century)
- Red and white chalk on dove-grey paper
- 308 x 222 mm
- Laid down and mounted on an old backing Inscribed lower left in pen and brown ink: A Carrache
The sheet depicts the head of a putto captured in an intimate and natural pose: the face is constructed through a soft chiaroscuro achieved with strokes of red chalk and delicate touches of white heightening. The formal structure recalls the Bolognese Carracciesque culture, in particular the models developed by Ludovico Carracci; however, in the absence of decisive comparisons, it has not been possible to advance a more precise attribution.
